How to use the hours calculator
- Enter a start and end time for each shift in 24-hour format. An end time earlier than the start counts as a shift past midnight, so an overnight 22:00 to 06:00 shift totals 8 hours.
- Add unpaid break minutes per shift: a half-hour lunch is 30. A break longer than the whole shift zeroes that entry and the row is flagged so you can fix it.
- Read the total in both formats: hh:mm for timesheets and reviews, decimal hours for payroll, where minutes are converted by dividing by 60.
- For a one-off conversion, use the card on the right: type 7.75 to see 7:45, or type 7:45 to see 7.75.
The math: each entry is clock-out minus clock-in minus the unpaid break. Decimal hours are minutes divided by 60, rounded to two places; going back, decimal hours times 60 gives minutes, rounded to the nearest minute. Worked example: 09:00 to 17:00 minus a 30-minute lunch is 450 minutes, which is 7:30 or 7.5.

How many hours is 9 to 5?
Eight hours: 17:00 minus 09:00 is 8 hours on the 24-hour clock. If you took an unpaid 30-minute lunch, the paid time is 7 hours 30 minutes, which is 7.5 in decimal hours. Enter any start and end time above and the subtraction, including a lunch deduction, is done for you.
How do I calculate hours between two times?
Convert both times to 24-hour format and subtract the start from the end: 09:30 to 17:00 is 7 hours 30 minutes. If the end time is earlier than the start, the span crosses midnight, so add 24 hours to the end first: 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours, not negative 16.
How do I add up my work hours for the week?

What are decimal hours?
Decimal hours write minutes as a fraction of 60, which is what payroll systems multiply by an hourly rate. Divide the minutes by 60: a quarter hour is 0.25, a half hour is 0.5, 45 minutes is 0.75. So 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5, never 7.30.
How do I convert decimal hours back to hours and minutes?
Multiply the decimal by 60 to get total minutes, then split off the hours: 7.75 times 60 is 465 minutes, which is 7 hours 45 minutes. The converter card on this page does both directions, including totals like 135:45 for a full week.
Do you store the times I enter?
No. Your start times, end times, and breaks are processed inside the browser tab and never sent to a server, never saved on our side, and never written to your browser's storage.
